Are you wondering where to go sightseeing on a rainy day?

I often receive questions from tourists at work such as, “It’s raining. Where should I go?”

When the weather is rainy, I recommend visiting indoor attractions. Shizuoka City has several museums and art museums that are easy to reach by train or bus, making them convenient places to visit even on a rainy day.

Museum shops are also worth visiting. Unlike typical souvenir shops, they offer unique items related to art, history, and local culture. You may find a special souvenir that you wouldn’t find at a regular souvenir shop!

Please check each museum’s official website below for opening days before your visit.

Shizuoka Prefectural Museum of Art:静岡県立美術館

In addition to the Collection Exhibition and special exhibitions, the museum also has a Rodin Wing.

The Rodin Wing displays 33 sculptures by Rodin, including The Gates of Hell. It also features sculptures created before and after Rodin’s time, with a total of 52 works on display.

In pleasant weather, the walk from “Pref. Art Museum Station”(Shizutetsu Railway) to the museum is a lovely option!

Near the museum, there are the Shizuoka Prefectural Library and the University of Shizuoka. In autumn, the ginkgo trees turn a beautiful golden yellow.

If you are visiting Shimizu Port on a cruise ship and want to experience a little of Shizuoka’s history, Sunpu Castle Park is an easy place to visit independently. You can get there by local train, explore the castle grounds, enjoy Japanese tea in a traditional garden, and even try Shizuoka oden—all in one short trip from the port.

Why Visit This Attraction?

If you are visiting Shizuoka City, Sunpu Castle Park is one of the highlights I highly recommend.

Tokugawa Ieyasu, one of Japan’s most famous shoguns, spent about one-third of his life in Shizuoka City. So even if you’re not particularly interested in Ieyasu, I still recommend visiting Sunpu Castle Park. It’s one of the places you shouldn’t miss when visiting Shizuoka City.

Sunpu Castle Park is also one of the easiest places to visit from Shizuoka Station if you want to explore Ieyasu’s connection to the city.

Although the castle keep has not been reconstructed, the impressive Tatsumi Yagura, a reconstructed castle tower, is well worth seeing. The massive Higashi-Gomon Gate is particularly striking.

If you’re interested in the architecture of castle towers, I recommend the Hitsujisaru Yagura.

You can also enjoy Shizuoka tea at Momijiyama Garden.

After exploring the park, why not enjoy some local food at Odenya Obachan and pick up some souvenirs?

Sunpu Castle was the residence of Tokugawa Ieyasu, who brought an end to the Sengoku period and established the Edo shogunate after becoming Seii Taishogun. Originally built in 1585, the castle underwent major renovations in 1607.

Lord Tokugawa Ieyasu

Sunpu Castle Park Guide Map

Higashi Gomon (Gate)/Tatusmi Yagura (Turret)・Hitsujisaru Tagura (Turret) 東御門 巽櫓・坤櫓

The East Gate was reconstructed in 1996 using traditional Japanese building methods and is now open as a museum. The nearby Tatsumi Yagura Turret, rebuilt in 1989, and was once an important defensive structure of Sunpu Castle.

Inside, you can see archaeological finds from the park and a recreated study room of Tokugawa Ieyasu!

The Hitsujisaru Yagura Turret was faithfully reconstructed in 2014 based on historical records, using traditional Japanese wooden construction techniques. Timber from trees more than 100 years old was used, and the foundations, pillars, and beams are joined with traditional woodworking methods without metal fittings.

Architecture enthusiasts should not miss it!

Momijiyama Garden 紅葉山庭園

From the entrance, the garden is divided into four themed areas: the Village Garden, Sea Garden, Mountain Village Garden, and Mountain Garden. Visitors can relax while enjoying seasonal plants and scenery.

There is also a tea house where you can enjoy Shizuoka green tea or matcha with traditional Japanese sweets.

The green hill covered with spring satsuki azaleas in the photo on the left is designed to represent Mount Fuji!

I’m a local myself, but I still visit from time to time. I enjoy taking a break from everyday life, having a cup of Shizuoka tea in the beautiful Japanese garden, and simply relaxing.

Oden-ya Obachan おでんや おばちゃん

Why not try Shizuoka Oden, a local specialty unique to Shizuoka City? Enjoy fish cakes, daikon radish, eggs, beef, and other local ingredients slowly simmered in flavorful broth.

The ingredients are full of rich, savory flavor, and the retro-style building is so charming too!

The friendly ladies who work here are used to welcoming tourists, so don’t hesitate to chat with them and enjoy the local atmosphere.

Why not ask them “which oden is the most popular” in Japanese? ➡ ”Ninki no oden wa nandesuka?”

If you are visiting Shimizu Port on a cruise ship and are looking for spectacular views of Mt. Fuji and Suruga Bay, Nihondaira is a great option for an independent trip. It is also easy to combine with a visit to Kunozan Toshogu Shrine by ropeway.

Why Visit Nihondaira?

Nihondaira Yume Terrace, designed by renowned Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, offers panoramic 360-degree views of Shizuoka City. On a clear day, you can also enjoy spectacular views of Mt. Fuji and Suruga Bay.

The ropeway to Kunozan Toshogu Shrine departs from Nihondaira, making it easy to visit both attractions in one trip.

You can also enjoy local Shizuoka tea at the café while taking in the views.

Nihondaira is said to have been named after the legendary prince Yamato Takeru. According to tradition, during his eastern expedition, he defeated enemies who had trapped him in a grass fire on the Kusanagi Plain. He then climbed this hill and admired the surrounding landscape, giving rise to the name Nihondaira.

Today, Nihondaira is a scenic hill standing 307 meters above sea level. It has been selected as one of Japan’s Top 100 Tourist Destinations and is designated as both a National Place of Scenic Beauty and a Prefectural Natural Park.

Nihondaira Yume Terrace (日本平夢テラス)

Nihondaira Yume Terrace is a scenic observation facility located about 300 meters above sea level and designed by the world-renowned architect Kengo Kuma. It is one of the must-visit attractions on Nihondaira. The beautiful wooden architecture blends harmoniously with the surrounding landscape and is a favorite spot for photography.

The first floor introduces the history of Nihondaira, while the second floor features a tea café where visitors can relax and enjoy views of Mt. Fuji. From the observation deck on the third floor, breathtaking panoramic views stretch across Mt. Fuji, Suruga Bay, and, in winter, the snow-capped peaks of the Southern Alps.

Kunozan Toshogu Shrine, the mausoleum of Tokugawa Ieyasu, is one of the must-visit places in Shizuoka City. You can reach the shrine by ropeway from Nihondaira or by climbing the 1,159 stone steps along the historic approach. In this guide, I’ll introduce the highlights of the shrine and how to get there.

Why Visit Kunozan Toshogu Shrine?

Kunozan Toshogu Shrine is the sacred resting place chosen by Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate.

The shrine’s main hall, registered as a National Treasure of Japan, is renowned for its magnificent lacquerwork and vibrant decorations. The museum displays more than 2,000 priceless artifacts associated with Tokugawa Ieyasu and successive shoguns.

If you visit Shizuoka, Kunozan Toshogu Shrine is a must-see destination that offers a fascinating glimpse into Japan’s history, culture, and samurai heritage.

Kunozan Toshogu Shrine is the original Toshogu shrine dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu, who is enshrined here as the deity of the shrine.

In his later years, Ieyasu spent his retirement as the retired shogun at Sumpu Castle (Shizuoka), where he passed away on April 17, 1616, after a dramatic and eventful life spanning 75 years.

Before his death, Tokugawa Ieyasu left instructions to his retainers regarding his burial and memorial rites: “Bury my body at Mount Kuno(Shizuoka), hold my funeral at Zojoji Temple in Edo (Tokyo), Place my memorial tablet at Daijuji Temple in Mikawa Province (Aichi), and after the first anniversary of my death, build a small shrine at Mount Nikko in Shimotsuke Province (Nikko) and enshrine me there.“

In accordance with these final wishes, his remains were buried at Mount Kuno, and Kunozan Toshogu Shrine was founded on that sacred site by order of the second shogun, Tokugawa Hidetada.

The Ⅿain Shrine Structures (National Treasure) 御社殿

Alongside Tokugawa Ieyasu, the Main Shrine also enshrines Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Oda Nobunaga as accompanying deities. After the Meiji-era Separation of Shinto and Buddhism, they were invited to the shrine as the three leaders credited with ending the Sengoku Period and bringing peace to Japan.

It’s incredible to think that three of Japan’s most famous warlords—Tokugawa Ieyasu, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and Oda Nobunaga—are all enshrined here as gods!

The Ⅿausoleum of Tokugawa Ieyasu 徳川家康公霊廟

After leaving the ropeway station, a climb of about 100 steps will take you to the mausoleum of Tokugawa Ieyasu. Along the way, you’ll find the famous Money Tree, a symbol of prosperity and good fortune. Many visitors pause to pray at both the tree and the mausoleum.

What Is the Money Tree? A Symbol of Ieyasu’s Teachings

Tokugawa Ieyasu taught three essential virtues: moderation in all things, kindness and compassion, and honesty. He advised his retainers that those who practiced these virtues consistently would be rewarded with prosperity and good fortune.

The Money Tree is based on a Japanese wordplay involving the final sound “ki” (き) in three virtues taught by Tokugawa Ieyasu: “Banji no Yoki” (moderation in all things), “Jihi Fukaki” (kindness and compassion), and “Shojiki” (honesty).

Tokugawa Ieyasu’s Precepts 徳川家康公御遺訓

Here are the famous precepts of Tokugawa Ieyasu.

Life is like a long journey with a heavy burden upon your shoulders—do not hurry.

Accept hardship as a constant companion, and you will never know want.

When desire stirs within your heart, recall the days of struggle and adversity.

Patience is the foundation of lasting peace; regard anger as your greatest enemy.

Those who know only victory and never defeat will eventually bring harm upon themselves.

Judge yourself before judging others.

Better to fall short than to exceed the proper measure.
